Papers, 1849-1861.

This collection includes nine letters, 1849-1859, written by Washburn to Horatio Gates Henshaw (1788-1860), cashier of a Leicester, Mass., bank. The first concerns one of Washburn's hymns, the lyrics of which are included in the letter. The remaining letters to Henshaw are business correspondence pertaining to Washburn's iron and wire works. The collection also includes a poem, entitled "The Vacant Chair, Thanksgiving 1861," composed by Washburn in honor of John William ("Willie") Grout (1843-1861). Grout, a member of the 15th Massachusetts Volunteers, is reputed to be the first Worcester man killed in battle during the Civil War. He died on 21 October 1861 at the Battle of Ball's Bluff. The poem and a brief letter, dated November 1861, were presented to Grout's parents, Jonathan Grout (1815-1882) and Mary J. (Smith) Grout (1817- ), by Washburn.
